A summer camp adventure

The Brief

To design, produce and deliver a summertime event for over 2500 adults and children. A full-service brief to include venue sourcing, invites, guest management, event design, event delivery and logistics.

The event must be an immersive experience from beginning to end, transporting guests into a vivid and exciting world with a range of activities, entertainment and top-notch food and drink. The event should evolve from kid-friendly and fun during the day, to a high-tempo event as dusk falls.

The Idea

The halcyon days that stretch on forever...campfires, marshmallows and dancing under the starry skies. There is nothing quite like it... summer camp…mixed with summer sports day.

We wanted to create an event that would embody the spirit of those free summer days for grown-ups whilst creating those special memories for kids. To do this we wanted to design an event which bought together the beauty of Wes Anderson’s ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, with the fun and slapstick of ‘American Wet Hot Summer’, and the best bits of sports day including the half time oranges.

From American camp counsellors welcoming guests under timber arches, to a yellow school bus serving nachos, swan pedalo rides on the campsite lake and dodgeball on the sports pitch - we wanted to have it all. Every touchpoint was considered throughout the design to deliver the ultimate summer camp experience.

The Result

The Getty Estate in Buckinghamshire was host to the festival-style event where over eighteen food traders in several dining areas served up al fresco treats from cookie dough and waffle sticks, to hot dogs, burgers, filled spuds, spicy chicken wings, mac’n’cheese and much more.

Three large themed bars - the ‘Dug Out Bar’, the ‘Gym & Tonic Bar’, and the ‘Trophy Bar’ - along with a slushy bar, an ice cream float bar and numerous smaller help yourself bars delivered everything from refreshing bubbles, to summer cocktails, American beers and herbaceous gin cocktails.

The activities on offer were vast and for all to enjoy including classic fairground favourite dodgems, sports day favourite tug’o’war, design a ping pong bat and screen-printing workshops, inflatable assault courses, hair braiding bars, and a whole lot more. We even had an American football team on hand to show off their skills.

A special ‘Little Campers’ field was designed and produced to be a safe place for kids to experience fun & games (and for parents to relax) with a main disco tent full of entertainers, and separate mini worlds of Science, Gardening and Art in smaller tents which contained workshops to inspire.

As the day drew to a close and dusk fell, a marching band complete with vaulting cheerleaders paraded around site and the winning sports team was announced at the raising of the flag.

Into the evening guests snuggled up under blankets and sat out under the stars soaking up the evening vibes whilst the outdoor food market continued to serve up flame grilled delights.

As the sun set the entire camp twinkled with vintage festoon whilst over in the Counsellor’s Clubhouse guests got involved in some serious dancing with a show from one of the best soul bands before sets from two of London’s top DJs played into the night.

We ran a coach service there and back for all guests and had everyone off site and on their way home to bed for lovely summer camp dreams by 1am.
